Read 180
Read 180 is an intensive reading program that focuses on reading fluency, vocabulary and
comprehension. Students move through three centers each day: small group instruction, independent reading,
and computer-based instruction. In small group, students have been focused on themes of Fires, Immigrants, and the Depression. Students watch videos, discuss content, and practice comprehension skills such as finding the
main idea and supporting details, sequencing events, and finding the character, setting, and plot. Students work
on their vocabulary by learning new words and reviewing concepts of prefixes, suffixes, antonyms, synonyms,
homophones, and word families.
Writing skills are also developed through writing a variety of paragraph types and focusing on grammar
such as identifying and correcting run-on sentences, using correct word order,
and remembering end punctuation and capitals.
During independent reading time, students choose books that
correspond to their reading level.
They complete worksheets that accompany the stories.
When students finish a story, they can take a test on the book and see
how well they comprehended what they read. The third rotation is instructional
software. The computer session includes videos on a topic, fluency practice, vocabulary instruction,
comprehension work, and spelling.
